In his book, “The Cost Of Discipleship”, Dietrich Bonhoeffer talks about cheap grace versus costly grace and I think it helps get us into a study of Discipleship.
Cheap grace is forgiveness without repentance; baptism without discipline, communion without confession; absolution without personal confession. And grace without discipleship, grace without the Cross is grace without Jesus.
Costly grace is the gospel which must be sought again and again, must be asked for again and again….keep on knocking. It calls us to follow Jesus Christ, it cost God the life of His Son.
Remember this please; It is costly grace because God did not reckon His Son too dear a price to pay for my life!!!!
Costly Grace is the incarnation of God; God with us, Emmanuel.
However, watch this; Costly Grace is turned into cheap grace without discipleship!
“Christianity without discipleship is always Christianity without Christ”! Bonhoeffer.
I read in 1 Peter this week in chapter 4:14-19 that we should be happy and blessed to be confronted about our faith in Jesus and that we should always be glorifying Him. The passage concludes with, “For the time has come for judgement to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God? …Therefore let those who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls to Him in doing good, as to a faithful Creator.”
I hope you will read the passage and contemplate with me, Am I a true disciple of Jesus?
As such, I hope tomorrow as we fast and pray together we will consider the ungodly and find a way to share the love of Christ with them at all cost! Costly Grace!!!!
God bless, Jim
